A FEW WORDS ABOUT OUR VENISON FARM
We are a traditional family run farming business, committed to producing high quality produce.
Our family has been farming the land at Horbling Fen for well over 100 years. It has always been a mixed farm with arable and livestock – livestock consisting of dairy and beef production.
We took delivery of our first deer back in 1994 and have built the herd up year on year, more recently with other animals brought in from other local herds to boost our breeding herd. Our venison farm now has in the region of 200 hinds and followers.
The decision was made in 2000 to cease milk production and a couple of years later there were no cattle at Horbling Fen, the first time since we started farming this land. It was very strange, having always milked twice a day – Pete and I would milk on Christmas morning to allow Pete’s brother to have time with his young family and when we got married, the timings had to fit around milking!

Our deer are Red Deer (cervus elaphus), the largest native deer and most widely farmed. They go into the rut in September through to October, with calves being born late May/early June. Calves grow quickly on the spring grass and stay with their mothers well into the winter, when they are weaned.
Our deer are on-farm slaughtered between 12 and 27 months, which means no stress of travelling or unfamiliar surroundings or people, thus keeping the animals calm and producing excellent meat that is both tender and tasty, without being too gamey or strong.
Our venison meat is all butchered on site at our venison farm, with fresh meat available at our farm shop (open when we are there, so please ring and check to save a wasted journey).

WE MAKE ALL OUR OWN BURGERS AND SAUSAGES ON OUR VENISON FARM, SO HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL AND KNOW EXACTLY WHAT GOES INTO THEM. WE NEVER USE MIXES AND PRIDE OURSELVES ON THE QUALITY OF OUR PRODUCE.
